This Harvard & the Legacy of Slavery initiative aims to address systemic inequities by developing and advancing visible, lasting, and effectual action grounded in Harvard’s educational mission and guided by the recommendations and findings of the Presidential Committee on Harvard & the Legacy of Slavery which was released in April 2022. This event will provide an overview of the Initiative, including the genesis and motivation for this work, implementation priorities for the next year, and ways to get involved. It will feature remarks from Sara Bleich (Vice Provost for Special Projects) who is leading this implementation effort, Richard Cellini (Director, Legacy of Slavery Remembrance Program ) who is leading the identification of direct descendants, Martha Whitehead (Vice President for the Harvard Library and University Librarian) who is leading Harvard’s partnership with the HBCU Digital Library Initiative, and Meira Levison (Juliana W. and William Foss Thompson Professor of Education and Society) who is leading the development of new curricular resources and trainings to support Harvard community members in teaching/discussing slavery and legacies of slavery.
